Q- What's the difference between peaches and nectarines?
A- Difference between peach and nectarine
Peach (Prunus persica) belongs to the family Rosaceae. It is native to China. Peach is the third most important temperate fruit next to apple and pear. China is the largest producer of peaches in the world. The botanical name persica came from Persia (now Iran) where it was introduced from China by silk traders in the third century BC.
The peaches have fuzzy skin. The fuz are trichomes on the peach skin. The nectarines have smooth skin and are free from trichomes. The gene PpeMYB25 is responsible for trichome formation on the fruit skin. The mutation in gene PpeMYB25 causes development of smooth skin peach fruits called nectarines.
