I(caps)ndia is an agricultural country, where due to natural calamities or other calamities, the crops of the farmers are destroyed and the crisis of livelihood arises in front of them. The Pradhan Mantree Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) was launched on 13 January 2016 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The objective of this ambitious scheme of the Government of India is to provide protection to the crops of farmers from bad weather and natural calamities. Farmers have to pay a very low premium for this crop insurance scheme. A premium of 2% has to be paid for Kharif crops and 1.5% for Rabi crops and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops. Any farmer of India can take advantage of this scheme. To take advantage of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the eligible farmer has to apply online or offline. Before the Prime Minister's crop insurance scheme, two schemes were running for crop insurance in the country, one scheme was named National Agri Insurance Scheme and the other scheme was named Modified Agri Insurance Scheme. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana has been brought in place of both these schemes. Because in both these schemes it was difficult to take insurance claims for the farmer . In order to simplify the claim and to reduce the premium, both these crop insurance schemes have been replaced by the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. In this scheme the last date of premium is last July for Kharif crops and last date of December for Rabi crops. This scheme is being operated under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Farmers can register online.
